Countryside Car Park Charges

This article is relevant to all West Surrey riders who want free access to our local countryside. John Oliver of the Save Newlands Corner Campaign Group has asked us to please consider passing the following information on to our members. If you would like to reply personally to John, please contact Mark Waters for John’s contact details. The Surrey Live article is here: https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/petition-surrey-council-parking-charges-15241937 The petition link is at the bottom of the article – but for ease of reference it is here https://petitions.surreycc.gov.uk/Charges/ The article mentions another petition by a Chobham resident, which already has nearly 10,000 signatures. Cycling Safety Focus Group – Guildford

Steven Cammiss, a Senior Lecturer in Law at Leicester Law School, University of Leicester, is undertaking a research study on the safety of vulnerable road users.  He will be holding focus groups with cyclists to discuss why we cycle, how safe (or otherwise) we feel, what can make us feel safer, and the role of the law in promoting safety, at the CyclingUK HQ in Railton Road, Guildford,  GU2 9JX.  He hopes to organise groups with a range of cycling experiences, but is particularly interested in hearing from occasional or social cyclists. You do not need to have been involved in an accident/incident; he is seeking views on perceptions of safety, not necessarily on actual incidents/prosecutions. Finally, when the research is published, participants will not be named; your anonymity is guaranteed.  There may be a small incentive offered to anyone who participates but details of this are not available at

Barry Annis

I think I am the only current rider who remembers Barry, but there may be former riders who visit our website. Sadly, Barry died as the result of a brain tumour on 16th July. He was a kind, gentle man and a gentleman. I was sad when he gave up club riding many years ago, for he was always good company. My memories of time spent together awheel are all happy ones. In 1981 Barry had his arm twisted to ride a trike in the National 24-hour Time Trial, accompanying two other W Surrey CTC members, Stuart Jackson and Edwin Hargraves, who were keen on breaking records on trikes and tandem trike. Riding for Farnham Road Club they won the team prize with a National Competition Record of 1230 miles (Stuart setting a club record of 456.6 miles). (See http://www.farnhamroadclub.co.uk/records/Club_Records_2017_11.pdf, where the name Mantle is also to be found.) There

Tour of the Hills Sunday 19th August – marshals required

It is now less than 5 weeks to the Tour of the Hills, our big event of the year.  As always, it requires a number of marshals to man the control points, and enable the event to take place.  Please volunteer your services, by e-mailing me (*protected email*), specifying whether you have a preference for your control times – early 9.00 to 11.00, middle 10.30 to 16.00, and late 12.30 to 18.00.  Those times are approximate, and do not mean that you will be required for the entire time.  Early volunteers will be given priority for their preference.A number of regulars have volunteered in recent years, which is much appreciated, but it would also be really good to welcome others who have not marshalled before.  It is not an onerous task, you will be given full instruction, and it will involve you in the club as well as supporting the
